Triple
combined excursion to Lapataia
| PAT-130 |
Bus - Train - Catamaran Located only 11 kilometers from the city, the Tierra del Fuego National Park is the only one that combines mountains, forests, and sea. The excursion starts heading southeast on National Route 3, going through the outskirts of the city and the foothills of Mount Susana, witness to the treatment of the prisoners of the ancient penitentiary in Ushuaia. The route continues through the valley of the Pipo River; at the edge of this river, you can find the station of the Austral Fueguino Railroad. Here, we will take the tour that will take us through the Cañadón del Toro, in the National Park, and we will continue our excursion towards Bahía Ensenada, where we will be able to see Isla Redonda and the snow capped mountains of the Sampaio chain (in Chile) on the other side of the Beagle Channel. Then we will go to the area of Lake Roca, walking a narrow trail--the sides of which present us with all of the species that make up the local flora. Arriving to Lake Roca, we take a walk along its border towards the Lapataia River, the lake's natural drainage point. From here, we have the landscape of Cerro Cóndor, whose summit reaches the border with the Chilean Republic. We continue towards the zone of Bahía Lapataia, passing by the Verde and Negra lagoons, where we will have the opportunity to do some walking; one walk is near the Laguna Negra, with a spectacular sight of the formation of peat moss, and the second walk takes us to a beaver dam and the beginning of the path that will take us to Bahía Lapataia, the end of National Route 3. At this point, one of our catamarans will be waiting for us to start a maritime excursion through the Beagle Channel. Once on board, we will begin to navigate through the waters that bathe the coasts of the Tierra del Fuego National Park. From Punta Tortuga, we will leave Bahía Lapataia behind, to head east towards the zone of Bahía Ensenada. During this part of the trip, we will also visit the region of the archipelago Bridges, a point of great interest due to the fact that a large quantity of birds and sea wolves are found in these islands. Alicia Island is famous for its large colony of Imperial Cormorants, and in La Isla de los Lobos (Seal Island), we can observe two different species of these mammals. Starting at the Les Eclaireurs lighthouse, we will start turning back towards the city, navigating towards the west and this time near the southern coast of Isla Grande. In this zone, we have Puerto Tunel, an ancient coastal wood mill where today scientists from different nationalities are excavating in order to study the Yamana culture. Entering the Bahía de Ushuaia, we will be surprised by the view of the city and the Martial Mountains that surround it. At 5:00 p.m., we will be back at the local tourist dock. |
