The Ría Deseado Natural Reserve is located 280 kilometers from the city of Comodoro Rivadavia: south on Route 3 to later take Route 281 east. Its distinctive characteristic is that it is the only South American river that in remote geological epochs stopped dumping its waters into the ocean and permited the sea to invade its ancient river bed 42 kilometers into the continent. It possesses spectacular landscapes and a rich variety of fauna: cormorants, Magellanic penguins, petrels, flamingos, swans, seagulls, skuas, oysters, plovers, antarctic pigeons, herons, dolphins, seals, etc. which come together to make the Estuary a true natural treasure. Other important reserves for their fauna as well as their landscapes are Cabo Blanco, Refugio de Vida Silvestre Cañadón del Duraznillo, Reserva Isla Pingüino, Reserva Bahía Laura, Punta Buque and the Monumento Natural Bosques Petrificados. |
