Perito Moreno and the Cave of the Painted Hands
PAT-105

Leaving Comodoro and heading towards the Andes Mountains in Route 40, we will reach Perito Moreno, an obligatory stop for those who come to Patagonia with the spirit of a genuine discoverer. From this point and travelling 163 kilometers to the south, we will find the Valle de Río Pinturas. The so-named "caves of the hands" are located in the canyon formed by the Pinturas River (The name of the river comes from the great quantity of paintings that are located all along the stream.) The canyon is more than 150 meters deep. You can observe the hands, in negative and positive, scenes of guanaco hunts, and a great variety of silhouettes and geometrical designs--all in a spectacular ambient that provokes an unforgettable experience. Due to the geographical environment of the region and the quantity of archeological fields found, it is considered to be the most important site of rupestrian paintings in all of Patagonia. It is intriguing to note the advanced knowledge that the people of this culture had about the minerals and vegetables that are found in the Patagonian ecosystem, which allowed them to obtain well-defined, strong, and extremely durable colors: after being exposed to the light of the sun and climatic severity for 9000 years, we can still clearly see them.
