Petrified Forest

The José Ormachea Petrified Forest

Located to the southeast of the province of Chubut and 175 km from Comodoro is the José Ormachea Provincial Reserve: here we can appreciate what was formerly a fertile forest of acaucarias, today silent witnesses of the process of petrification, in a framework of an overwhelming lunar landscape. You can arrive by National Route 3 and Provincial Routes 26 and 20.

Close to Lake Musters and in the middle of a desert landscape with a great variety of colors and forms like the Lunar Valley, the Cerros de Colores, and the Cerros Colorados, we find the Geological reserve formed by coniferous fossils which date more than 65 million years. It is a place where the fossilized trees are still rooted to the same place where they grew and lived, now forming a large accumulation of fossilized wood an trunks. There are excursions to this forest during the entire year, leaving Comodoro Rivadavia at 9:00 a.m. and returning at 6:00 p.m.

The Jaramillo Petrified Forest

260 kilometers to the south of Comodoro Rivadavia and in the middle of a solitary Patagonian meseta, we find the Monumento Natural Bosques Petrificados de Jaramillo, with trunks with spectacular dimensions of 2 meters in diameter and 50 meters long.

Trips to this forest are scheduled for 4 days and 3 nights, leaving from Comodoro Rivadavia and visiting the Petrified Forest as well as the city of Puerto Deseado with its estuary and marine fauna.
