Excursion
to the Petrified Forest of Sarmiento
| PAT-104 |
Duration: Approximately 8 hours Leaving Comodoro towards the south and then taking Route 26 towards the city of Sarmiento, we will be able to see important oil fields like Trébol, Pampa del Castillo, Valle Hermoso, and Cerro Dragón and we will be able to learn a little more about the industry that keeps the world in movement. We will visit pools, pumping units, batteries, tanks, drilling rigs, etc. After having lunch in the city of Sarmiento, we will enter the Provincial Reserve José Ormaechea, popularly called the Petrified Forest. As its name implies, it is a Geological Reserve, formed of coniferous fossils that date 60 million years. This is an area where the fossilized trees are found still in the same place where they grew in the past, or where they form large accumulations of fossilized wood. The process has been very slow--only the passing of millenniums has allowed the area to achieve such wonderful perfection. Different geological forces and pressures sank this forest area and now they have appeared again due to the erosive action of the wind. You will be able to contemplate the scene of magnificent landscapes of interesting formations like Valle Lunar (The Lunar Valley) and Cerros Colorados (The Red Hills) whose forms are due to the whims of the wind that has been eroding the land. The hills, with so many colors and clearly defined almost perfect horizontal lines, reflect the different stages of geological activity during millions of years. Returning, we will visit the regiment 25 de Mayo, located 6 kilometers from Sarmiento, where you will find the only museum dedicated exclusively to the War of the Malvinas Islands. |
